SPRING 2016: The Return of “DONE” Hair!

Looking artfully disheveled has become an obsession in the beauty world. We pay good money to have our hair color appear grown out, strive to create styles that look like bedhead, and like our makeup ever-so-slightly imperfect. How delightful it is to receive a hair compliment, then casually reply with, “Oh, these textured waves? I slept on them.”

It’s safe to say that looking like you don’t give a s..t has become a trend. So much so, one could argue that the most provocative beauty statement you could make right now is to show up without a hair out of place. This may be why many of the spring 2016 runway shows featured just that: the return of “done” hair.

Hairstylists at DVF, Balmain x H&M, Victoria Beckham, and more sent models down the runway with hair that looked like it took time, effort, skill, and a range of products to achieve. Could this be the end of gym hair as we know it? I’m all for it!

Below are 3 styles that I am obsessed with and a list of the products and how to use them so that YOU too can look polished and pretty for Spring!

Over-The-Top Volume At Balmain X H&M:

A more affordable Balmain wasn’t the only thing to come out of the collaboration that rocked the fashion world this year. Models at Balmain x H&M’s show wore big, side-parted curls that screamed “rich-girl hair.” Cop the look using RandCo Park Ave Blowout Balm to blowdry. Set dry hair with large rollers and spray on a heavy dose of RandCo Outer Space Hair Spray….remove rollers and brush out with a soft brush. Side part it and then finish with a heavy application of Vicious Strong Hold spray from RandCo. Voila! You’re good to go!

The Return Of Pin Curls At Diane Von Furstenberg!

The hair at DVF was inspired by a ’70s photo of Von Furstenberg herself that showed a rare occasion when she let her curls go free…And we all know she has killer hair. The secret to copping the look? Pin curls. When I want to achieve this look, I curl small sections of hair with a 3/4-inch iron, pin them to the scalp, and allowed them to cool. Use a little RandCo Outer Space on those small sections. This technique works on any texture, from straight to curly, as it helps to both create and define pristine ringlets. Remove the curls and brush out gently…You want to keep some of the bounce. Finish off with some RandCo Foil (an anti-humidity and anti-static spray that is fantastic for shine and separation)

Chic, Deep Waves At Carolina Herrera…

For this look, stylists created waves at Carolina Herrera’s show by using a curling iron in a unique way. Are you savvy with the curling iron? Read on: Working on 2-inch sections of hair, press a hot 1.5-inch iron against the hair to create a deep dent, or groove, then repeat on the other side, alternating down the length. Spray a little RandCo Dallas Thickening spray on each dry section to give a little extra hold.

As always, La La Luxe is here to help you achieve ANY hair goals….Give us a call or ask us at your next appointment for a little “how-to”! We love helping you! 401.383.3797

Don’t Hide Under That Hood, WINTERIZE Your Hair!

In New England, we winterize everything from our cars to our houses to pretty much everything. We prepare for the worst and hope for the best. The same should go for your hair. As funny as it sounds, your hair can go from healthy to hay in about 4 weeks if you don’t “winterize” those locks. I’m serious! One month of dry, indoor heating and freezing cold conditions outside will strip your scalp and your hair from the healthy moisture it needs to survive.

So what can you do?

1. Make sure you have a moisturizing, deep conditioning mask like Happy Campers Conditioning Treatment from Evo Australia (available at La La Luxe).  Use it every time you shampoo your hair or when you feel as though your hair is too dry. Saturate the ends, leave on for 5 minutes and rinse. Your hair will thank you.

2. Keep those ends healthy and happy by frequently “micro-trimming”. What’s that you say? A micro-trim targets the ends of your hair only.  Trimming a half-inch or less off of your hair every 4-6 weeks doesn’t disrupt any growing-out plans and doesn’t really shorten the hair noticeably or change the shape. It just prevents the ends from splitting or breaking. It’s the perfect cure for dry, winter hair and it keeps your haircut fresh much longer than if you waited 8 or more weeks.

3. Book a blowout. A weekly blowout. I can’t tell you how amazing this is during the colder months.  Trying to stretch your shampooing from every day to once weekly will do wonders for your hair. A professional blowout involves cleansing the hair thoroughly and setting the hair in place so that it lasts much longer than doing it yourself at home. Ask anyone who has their hair done 1-2 times a week by a professional and they will tell you  how amazing it is.  You don’t have to worry about it for a week! Perfect for the holidays and a perfect pick-me-up!

4. Book a conditioning treatment at your next appointment. For about $15 at La La Luxe, you get a moisturizing treatment that can be a miraculous thing for your locks. The treatment lasts about 2 weeks and the more you do them, the more your hair improves over time.

5. Although we don’t sell coconut oil at the salon…we all have it in our bathrooms at home. Used on the hair as a treatment or as a smoother on your ends, coconut oil is a game-changer. Saturate the ends and sleep with it in your hair…shampoo out the next morning and you will notice a major improvement in dryness. Dab a little on freshly blowdried hair and your hair will absorb what it needs…a little goes a long way.  If you need advice on how to use coconut oil, definitely give us a call…we have a lot of tricks and ways to use it. You can purchase it at any market.

6. Static and frizz make a frequent appearance in the winter, so use products that say “frizz control” or “smoothing”.  Love Perpetua Shine Drops from Evo (also available at La La Luxe) are perfect to smooth over dry hair after styling or whenever you notice your hair looking like it’s a Mr. Wizard experiment, exploding with static electricity. You can also blowdry your hair with the drops or leave in and scrunch your curly hair with it. No matter what your texture is, it works!

As always we are here for any questions you may have and would love to show you how to manage your hair at home. Call the salon or book an appointment online. 401.383.3797

Spring 2014 Campaign:Spring Awakening. Photographed by Corey Grayhorse, Styled by John Alves, Hair/Makeup La La Luxe. Concept, Leah Carlson and Corey Grayhorse

We are SO honored to be able to present to you a sample from a collection of photo’s showcasing a load of talent delivered by a 3-headed monster consisting of Corey Grayhorse, John Alves, Leah Carlson and the team at La La Luxe Salon (Emily Johnston, Ambur Gill and Savanna Osborne).  Most of the fashion seen here was designed by local designer and friend, Nick Pini (@nickpini). Hair was styled by Leah Carlson, Ambur Gill and Savanna Osborne.  Makeup was done by Leah Carlson.

Carlson and Grayhorse’s concept for the shoot was to create a sense of glorious change as we shift from winter into spring.

The hair was styled in a conservatively beautiful approach using Bumble and bumble Brilliantine for shine and smoothness and then finished off with Bumble and Bumble Shine-On for extreme sheen that mimiced the brightness of the sun.  Make-up was “undone” and very minimalist using MAC Cosmetics Strobe Cream on the cheekbones, nose and lips for that glow-from-within. Eyes were stained with a little rose-gold eyeshadow and everything was finished off with a little pop of tomato-red on the lips.

The result of this collaboration? A series of photos that make everyone feel a little warmer and happier. Join us as we let go of the cold and embrace the sweet, bright and beautiful vulnerability that spring brings to us. Enjoy! XO
